It would be sick if they held military parade because they are afraid. Military parades are held as a tradition, for unity, conservatism, nationalism. Its a cultural thing.

Different reasonings can be pointed out for why a military parade is brought up:

I: The said nation is insecure on the global stage and wants to secure their spot on the sun by being explicit about their power, glorious greatness, might and vigour that a military parade portrays, alluding to senses of (sometimes fake) unity and greatness - China in part

II: They can be held by the political establishment to divert attentions from other mundane problems and thus leads the people to go admire the military parade and its might, alluding to false senses of stability - China in part

III: They are held to commemorate Historical marks of a Nation-State's common history, they have a strong customary aspect to it: "We do it because it has always been this way" - France on Bastille Day and Russia (partly) on Victory Day along with Britain on Trooping The Colour.

IV: They are held to exacerbate nationalism for no real reason and as a simple show of power (same as reason 1 tbh)
