Community Threads.

Hello guys! How are you all doing?

As the title suggest. There are many community forums and events that for some reason have a rather poor or nonexistence performance. How good are mods at managing those threads? Let's take a look at the survey!



Of course, according to this, they does "A good management", and their performance is around 3 of 5. If we remove all the "Good" votes (mostly used by undecided players), the balance greatly inclines over the bad job. What is failing over there?

Where the legends are made. This topic is one of the most important and marks the achievements of many players. Though, it have 2 months since the last upgrade. Chess reply literally was:

Updated the ELO Peak and Competence List. I am going to do the tournament things and etc. later as well.

And for future references. I didn't update the record book because I saw no point to maintain something that isn't being appreciated. In fact it was being disapproved even tough I invested quite a lot of time managing this record book.

Anyone who posts offensive comments here... I am going to delete that post and just put you on ignore. If you want your record to be on the record book you have to ask another moderator. I decided to take up on this project again because I don't think others should be affected because some people decided to be unmannered.

Now we have to remark how many times have we asked another moderator to update this, their reply (cough cough I wish I had SS of this, cough cough) was always "Ask Chess". So Chess tell us to ask other mod, other mods tell us to ask chess. Seems legit! What does Mods expects us to do?

Probably the most complete thread about AtWar ever. This guide was a gem back at his times, but outdated since the new release of AtWar. What makes it be mentioned here is basically two facts:

1) It can be accessed through the "Help" Panel. How many players already saw this list yet falls in disillusion after see it outdated? By checking it in the "Who visited" feature, you can guess a lot of players are!

2) The own guide promises a better version:

But after 3 years we must assume that version is never coming out! If moderators abandon this, why is still marked as "In progress" yet?

Of course, right now we have 3 additional tools: Cthulhu's AW knowledge Collection [Public, Updated], Desu's Guide to 3vs3 and Clan War [Private, Outdated (presumably abandoned)] and Pulse's GIF guide to AtWar [Public, status unknown]. Though, would one of those three guides actually replace Hugosch one? Pulse's one probably would! No movement yet though!

As a bonus, I'd like to add about the banlist: Taking into account the two months between Pulse and Laochra's reply, we can say the thread was basically abandoned by 2 months!. Compared to the barely one page of discussion back when the banlist was new, right now you can find up to 5 pages of discussion, with many problems not being addressed. Did the players received their response in PM? Maybe the whole process is happening on private, hidden from the public? We cannot know this yet it seems like no is the most reasonable answer.

Of course, I've proposed for a solution to all this: Self-Moderation. When will moderators give the control of the threads to common users? By choosing one player active and willing to administrate the thread, it could'be done pretty easy. Yet once again, a moderator stops the idea "In the defense of the community". If they won't allow us to administrate the pages that are made for our good, and they don't administrate them, then what are we going to do?

Because if we were actually able to stick threads and create our own posts about that matter, the problem would had been solved long ago,but sadly with huge spam of several players doing the same thing...

Since becoming a mod, i've learned the mechanism is already in place for control of the thread. The thread's creator is responsible for controlling any spam. {He can cite the rule being broken, and a mod can then look into it and take action if needed.}

If the thread's creator, or anyone else, doesn't report an issue, moderators rarely act, as we do not wish to censor, and are sensitive to this. Only in blatant cases, will mods act unilaterally. Players have the tools to make the forums excellent already. Presently they are a reflection of the community, and the thread creators. ♥

Then you think adding up more mods and more control to AW will solve anything? Or any kind of "Status quo" in which we have both mods and control... While having no mods and players able to manage themselves is not that realist, having some tools for manage ourselves without mods won't hurt...

Ok, maybe I wrote that wrong... what I mean is that, if Chess won't administrate his AW Hall of Fame, we should'be allowed to make a new hall of fame, and also it to be sticked instead of chess's one.

... This, of course, unless Chess want to delegate the control to someone, but I dunno he will give something he had worked for so much time.

The "Tools" I was talking for... Were the ability to stick a thread, and also the capacity for... with capacity, I 've see other players doing a thread that was already made by someone else, when a player sees it, he redirect him to that thread. When a mod see it, the thread is locked.

I'll message you about the stickies, but i think it's easy to understand why this ability isn't given to everyone.

As for redirecting, mods lock these so there aren't multiple threads on the same topic. {Again, i think this is easy to understand and sound practice.}

Competition man... I already admit having that multiple threads is not pretty good, but.. let's say, if you have a farm that sells potatoes, and someones buy a farm to sell potatoes right at your side, then you are having competition now, and if you want to win, you must improve... The public will buy to the one who offer best service.

I should assume that if those threads have competence, they must improve. I'll put the process:

1. Player A makes a thread.
2. Player B already had a thread about the same subject, and is glued on forums.
3. Player A things his thread is better than player B, and request his thread to be glued.
4. Moderators check and compares player A and B thread.
5. Upvote & Moderators opinion ranking decides who win.
6. If player A wins, his thread is glued. Player B thread is unglued.


Here is how the ranking works:

For stick, a thread requires:

1. A thread more upvotes than B: 50% moderators approval (1 of 2 mods).

2. A thread at least half and quarter of the upvotes than B: 60% moderators approval. (6 of 10 mods).

3. A thread have half or less upvotes: 75% moderators approval (3 of 4 mods).

(btw, I used glued because I couldn't find the past form of "Stick")

Yeah I am still thinking what to do if a 3rd person also makes a thread, then the spam would be too much... Same if the loser thread should be deleted or what.. so the idea is not completed.

I think what most moderators are trying to promote is a single place for the discussion. Two players can still 'compete' in a single thread (if that is the objective.) The efficiency of one thread though is all viewpoints can be found in one location, rather than having to go to multiple threads and piece together all perspectives. Your suggestion would take additional time for mods to contribute and decide a winner (which can also be divisive).

Bla... you are right, but is still bad to see how all those damm threads are outdated... If anyone have a suggestion pls.

More participation yes!
Horizontal structure? No. Not in web; always pyramidal when community is (limitedly) diverse.
As to forum: yes, we need tools to administer forums and sub-forums.

I don't care in the slightest. Nobody, absolutely nobody, should feel even the slightest bit insulted by blockheaded stereotyping morons who have no idea what they're talking about.

Why bother locking threads? Let them have their fun.

From the rules:

5. .... This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about members or guests, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, attacking a member or guest based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. ...

So barring any other violations, as long as said individual is not a member or guest of AW, it appears they are fair game.

I've got a idea. though it looks like just add more harm to mods... I'll explain anyway:

1. A thread enlisting all the community-related threads, the last time since update, and maybe another part about the status...
2. Community threads are assigned to different Moderators (Goes along with #1).
3. Mark as an objective to "Maintenance the threads updated with at least 1 week of delay".
4. Moderators takes the responsibility of those threads.

So, in #4 is because, if the thread is not updated in time, then someone must take the responsibility. But of course, a moderator might have RL priorities and not being able to do it. So for add flexibility to the process I've though about two replacements:

1) By changing step #3, and leaving the update time to unlimited.
2) By changing step #4, and leaving up other mods to update the thread if someone couldn't.
3) A variant of the last process, but changing #2 instead. All the threads are just pointed at with no names, and moderators are free to update or not update them.

I am working on the record book and community wishlist right now so feel free to cross that out of your list.

About the #5, seems quite easy to fix though, if you guys aren't working on a guide then just remove the starting quote, so we don't have to wait for an update.

You guys were very enthusiast, I wonder where it go. There are way more outdated threads than this list... And even threads from this list haven't been updated.

I wonder where the rest of mods are.... or just some few mods takes out this duty?
