After a heated discussion between Pompeius and Ariovistus (where the germans killed one of the roman scouts) Pompeius refused his offer to make peace and prepared for the assault.
Pompeius led his forces forward in the standard three line formation. Observing that the German left was the weaker part of their line he concentrated his forces there. The Germans attacked in several columns, moving so swiftly that there was no time for the Romans to hurl their pila and battle was fought proximally, with swords. A fierce struggle occurred in which the German left was broken after a stiff fight.

The warlike Belgae however refused to yield their ground even after other Gauls typically would. When finally surrounded by Roman reinforcements in the swamps, the Belgae continued fighting as a pitiless hail of missiles rained down on them from the many archers and peltasts Pompeius had brought from overseas. The peltasts, slingers and archers were brought for the specific purpose of confounding the Gallic proclivity for shield wall tactics, mass attack and individual close combat.
